Tax-Free UAE vs.
Citizenship-Based U.S. Taxation

While Dubai offers 0% personal income tax, the IRS requires U.S. citizens to report their worldwide income regardless of where they live. Our firm bridges this gap, ensuring that your financial success in the Middle East is protected from "Draconian" IRS penalties.

Physical Presence Test

We meticulously track your qualifying travel days to secure the $126,500+ Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE).

Dubai Housing Exclusion

Maximize Section 911 deductions using adjusted IRS housing limitations specific to the Dubai cost of living.

Dubai Expat Tax CPA

Do Americans Living in Dubai
Have to File U.S. Taxes?

The short answer: Absolutely.

U.S. citizens and Green Card holders must file tax returns annually regardless of their physical location. Even in a tax-free jurisdiction like Dubai, the IRS mandates the reporting of worldwide income and foreign assets. Failure to comply can result in catastrophic penalties exceeding $10,000 per violation. Many Americans in Dubai search for a U.S. tax CPA near them who understands expat tax rules and IRS international reporting requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

I live in Dubai and pay 0% local tax. Do I still owe U.S. income tax?

Yes. The U.S. is one of the only countries that taxes based on citizenship, not residency. While you won’t pay UAE income tax, you must still file a U.S. return if your worldwide income exceeds the filing threshold. However, we can often reduce your U.S. tax bill to $0 using the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE), which allows you to exclude up to $130,000 for the 2025 tax year (increasing to $132,900 for 2026).

It can. If you own a business in Dubai (Mainland or non-qualifying Free Zone) that pays the 9% UAE corporate tax, you may now be eligible for the U.S. Foreign Tax Credit (FTC). This is a shift from previous years when no local tax existed to “credit” against your U.S. bill. We help business owners coordinate these payments to avoid double taxation.

  • April 15, 2026: Deadline to pay any tax owed for 2025.

  • June 15, 2026: Automatic extension to file your 1040 (no form required for expats).

  • October 15, 2026: Final filing deadline if you requested an extension (Form 4868) by June 15.

  • FBAR Deadline: April 15, 2026, with an automatic extension to October 15.

Yes, if the aggregate value of all your foreign accounts (including savings, current, and even some life insurance policies) exceeded $10,000 at any point during the calendar year. This is filed via the FBAR (FinCEN Form 114). Additionally, under FATCA, UAE banks (like Emirates NBD, FAB, and ADCB) share account data with the IRS, making accurate disclosure more critical than ever.

To qualify for the FEIE, you must be outside the U.S. for 330 full days in a 365-day period. Even a quick 10-day trip back to the U.S. can jeopardize your exclusion if not timed correctly. We provide precise travel-tracking audits to ensure you meet the IRS requirements and keep your Dubai income tax-free.

Surprisingly, no. There is no bilateral income tax treaty between the U.S. and the UAE. This makes professional planning essential, as you cannot rely on treaty benefits to lower your tax. Instead, we must rely on internal IRS mechanisms like the Foreign Housing Exclusion—which is particularly high for Dubai residents—to minimize your liability.
